Thiessen Orchards Donating 75,000 Pounds of Apples on Their 75th Anniversary in Business
Thiessen Apple Orchards has teamed up with The Salvation Army in Leamington and is making a
donation of fresh apples to help stock the food bank for the entire Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent
County Regions.
In celebrating Thiessen’s 75th year in business, Peter Thiessen, a 2nd generation farmer,
is committing 75,000 pounds of fresh apples to The Salvation Army. The Salvation Army will
be involved in harvesting and distributing the fresh apples to local charitable organizations
throughout the community.
“We are so fortunate to have been in business for 75 years and we appreciate the support of our
long standing customers and neighbours. Due to the current economic situation, we wanted to help
replenish some of the urgent need for food in our local area”, explained Thiessen.
“We are elated with the generosity of the Thiessen Family. We have seen a huge influx of people in
need this past year, with people losing their jobs, and people’s income being depleted," said Corey
Vincent, Captain/Pastor Salvation Army Leamington Corps. "With the current economic conditions,
this could not have happened at a better time!”
This incredible commitment will help thousands of needy families in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent
County just in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas with the all important ingredients for homemade
apple pie, and apple sauce, and for tasty and healthy snacks for children’s lunches.
The Salvation Army and Thiessen Orchards are hoping that people in the community and local schools
will be willing to help volunteer with the harvest of the fruit. "Picking 75,000 pounds of apples
is a lot of work and we are going to need a lot of help," said Vincent. Volunteers are encouraged
to contact their local Salvation Army to help with the harvest. A donation kettle will also be
available at the Orchard for anyone who would like to contribute.
Thiessen Apple Orchards is a family run business located just 2 ˝ miles east of Leamington Ontario
on Talbot Road East just a short 40 minute drive from Windsor or Chatham.
In addition to Pick your Own Apples and wagon rides, Thiessen’s also offer food and entertainment. Bouncy castles, arcade, hay mow, clowns, face painting, live entertainment and pumpkin picking are available for a fun filled family day on the farm. The Kountry Kitchen serves sausage on a bun, hotdogs, apple fritters, caramel apples as well as fresh apple cider and of course, homemade apple pie.
Honey Crisp, Royal Gala and McIntosh are the first apple varieties ready for picking starting in
September. Other varieties such as Mutsu, Empire, Jonnagold and Red and Golden Delicious will be
available in late September and early October. The Orchard is open every day from 10 am to 5 pm
until October 18th including Thanksgiving Monday.
